In the hands of experienced professionals, powder metallurgy is a technically advanced process for manufacturing highly sophisticated net-shape components. The demand for powdered metal parts in the automotive industry has steadily increased, and at Volunteer Sintered Products, we maintain a leadership position in this market. Our pioneering methods allow us to cost-effectively produce close-tolerance parts that exhibit an elevated level of quality and precision.
This is one example of how we helped one of our automotive industry clients. The specification for this automotive bushing called for close dimensional tolerances of ±.0004". The company's current vendor was using an intensive O.D. grinding process to achieve this exacting level of precision. To control manufacturing costs, the client approached us to learn what alternatives we could offer that would benefit both quality and price.
Our design engineers examined the specifications and then developed an alternative strategy for producing a better quality product at a significantly reduced cost. We created near-net shape parts that required minimal secondary grinding by redesigning the tooling and using our expertise in all aspects of powdered metal processing. The construction material was pre-alloyed steel powder, and our high-tech compacting presses allowed us to keep tight control over factors such as ram speed, stroke length, and dwell times to produce parts with consistent quality.
Manufactured to SAE standards, the bushings were approximately 50% less costly to produce using our innovative tooling design and manufacturing methods.
